Day 1: learning the KH1 menus

It’s a very cold, but sunny day, following on a scant inch of snow overnight, so playing with the new radio has been an indoor thing today.

Looks sunny and cold, doesn’t it ? A stubbly field on a ridge to the northwest.

The KH1 has a lot of menu functions that I am working through with the aid of the Owners Manual. I found the real-time clock, and set the date and UTC time; I’m also writing down various parameter settings for a permanent record of the factory setup, just in case.

It’s really hard to get a good picture of the LCD display.

I want to get familiar with the menus before I try to operate.

Showing the alternate lower line of the display.

I have also downloaded the .pdf manual to my phone, so I won’t need to carry the big (22 pages, double-sided) print document out in the field, it’s just a little unwieldy without a table or something to put it down on while handling the radio. I really don’t want to drop it!

The radio feels solid, with no rattle or wiggle anywhere; everywhere the fit is clean and tight, the finish is flawless. (did I mention I’m afraid to drop it? this is why!)

I think the audio from the internal speaker is good, though I have heard only a few signals. A couple of reviewers didn’t like it, but so far it seems okay.

For weight comparison: my fully-accessorized Leatherman Surge, plus the optional stub of pencil and 4″ adjustable wrench; almost 1 1/4 pounds!

That’s about all for today; more tomorrow! Thanks for visiting driftlessqrp!
