Pebble HF – part 1

Back in late March I saw this article and after reading it, I followed the link to the Pebble HF website, and got myself on the waiting list. As time passed, I got an email update or two, and last week I got a notice that my kit had shipped !

It arrived yesterday! Woohoo!

Here’s what was in the box, partly unpacked.

Before I start putting it all together I’ll need to clear some space on the worktable, so this is just the beginning of a series of posts.

Inside the housing; a knob, a sticker, a bag of small parts, and magnet wire.

In the bag: rotary encoder, 2 pushbuttons, headers, BNC and TRS jacks, three BS170 transistors, two toroid cores, an electret microphone, and a little lever-action microswitch.

I really like the idea of the microswitch as a built-in straight key for CW operating. Just like a Paraset!

I ordered the ISP programmer too, so I can update the firmware as needed.

Three BS 170 FETs in parallel seem to be the go-to final output transistors for QRP rigs, you see them everywhere. It’s hard to argue with a price of seventeen and a half cents each (in 100 quantity).

Well, there you have the text-and-still-photographs version of an unboxing video. I’m going to go clean off some space on the bench and warm up the soldering iron!
